+++ Registration for Our 18/19 Summer Holiday Programs Now Open +++

It’s that time of year again and we’re excited to tell you about our upcoming Summer series of holiday programs. This year we’ll be providing seven programs, split into children between 5 and 10 years and children between 11 and 18 years. Here are the activities we’ll be covering:

Riders aged 10 and Under - All Programs

This program is suitable for beginners and for more experienced riders, it will include Ready Set Trot levels Green to Blue.  Unmounted activities include lessons in stable management and care of horses and equipment.   Children will ride at least twice daily, activities include traditional lessons, mounted games, trail riding and active riding.  Riders will be grouped according to age and riding experience.

Riders aged 11 to 18 - Program 1 This popular program is running twice this holidays, once in December (11th to 13th) and once in January (15th to 17th)

This program’s theme is show jumping and cross country jumping.  You'll learn to ride correctly and safely with good balance and control in 2 and 3 point position, to navigate a course of obstacles at the appropriate height for your skill level and confidence, and will practice riding at a nominated speed around a cross country course.  We will have a hunter trials event on the last day.  We modify the content of this program to suit the experience and skill level of riders in each group. so don't worry if you're a beginner, you won't miss out on anything!

Riders aged 11 to 18 - Program 2

This program’s theme is dressage test riding, formation riding and show horse.  You will learn how to navigate your way around a dressage arena, how to ride accurate figures, memorise a test and perform it to get the best work out of your horse and how to achieve the best score you can  for your level.  You will learn how to present yourself and your horse for show horse competitions, how to ride the perfect workout and we'll have some fun in a Zia Park show horse competition.  We will put together a musical formation ride for you to practice every day and when we've got it just right we will film it and publish it on You Tube.  We always modify the content of our courses to suit the experience of each group, so don't worry if you're a beginner, you will be able to participate in everything.

Riders aged 11 to 18 - Program 3

This program’s theme is mounted games and trail riding.  Mounted games are excellent for developing riders' balance, agility and confidence.  They are great for teaching riders to participate in a team and, best of all, they are FUN!  We'll have team and individual competitions throughout the program, you will learn the rules and strategy for several different games.  Trail riding is a great way to enjoy a relaxing ride and to see nature and the countryside from the back of a horse.  You'll learn the different types of saddlery we use for trail riding,  how to maintain safe distances, how to read horses' body language for safety, etiquette on the trail, control of the horse in the open, how to look ahead for things that might scare your horse and how to cope with the unexpected.  We'll ride out to different places every day,  and if the weather is hot enough we may even get to take a ride to the lake for a swim.  Beginners and experienced riders will all benefit from and enjoy this program.  Riders will be grouped and the content tailored to suit the level of experience and confidence of each group.

Gail Simms on Horse Chats

A few weeks ago I had the opportunity to record a podcast with Glenys Cox from HORSE CHATS about my experiences with horses and some insights that I've managed to gain over the years. It was a great conversation and we covered many topics including how I got started, the ins and outs of running a horse riding business and what it takes to run a trail riding business in Western Australia.  I had a lot of fun on HORSE CHATS; check it out and let me know what you think! There are many other interesting podcasts on HORSE CHATS with great horsemen from all over Australia, including several Western Australians, I hope you enjoy listening to them.  I've been invited to talk more in depth about a few of the subjects that we covered so expect more soon!

Zia Park visits the Wheatbelt

ZIA PARK and Ready Set Trot took a trip to the WA wheat belt this week with a truckload of ponies for a truckload of fun! Thanks to the hospitality of Melanie and Daniel Nixon, we had the use of their fantastic facilities to deliver a Ready Set Trot program to some super keen country kids who don't have the chance to come to Perth for riding lessons. What a great time we had, thanks to all the parents, coaches, kids and ponies for a wonderful experience. Special thanks to Mel for organising this program, and to both Mel and Daniel for looking after the people, ponies, and truck so well!
