Our event is only open to riders who have enrolled in Zia Park lessons, clinics or school holiday programs within the previous 12 months. Our agistment clients are also very welcome to enter.
This event will have two classes: a Groundwork obstacle course and a Handy Pony course.
A Groundwork Obstacle Course is a series of obstacles completed with the horse from the ground, rather than while riding. The course is designed to develop communication, trust, respect, and handling skills between horse and handler.
Obstacles may include leading over poles, weaving through cones, backing up through a corridor, crossing a bridge or tarp, side-passing over a pole, forehand turns, and navigating around various objects. Participants are assessed on their ability to guide their horse calmly, safely, and accurately through the course while maintaining good control and partnership.
Groundwork obstacle courses are suitable for horses and handlers of all experience levels and help improve confidence, responsiveness, and horsemanship skills.
A Handy Pony Course is a fun riding challenge designed to test a rider's ability to safely and efficiently navigate a series of obstacles that simulate everyday situations a horse and rider might encounter. Riders are judged on their control, accuracy, horsemanship, and partnership with their horse.
Obstacles may include:
Opening and closing a gate
Riding over poles or small jumps
Weaving through cones
Dismounting and remounting
Carrying or delivering an object
Backing through a designated area
Crossing bridges, tarps, or other obstacles
The aim is to complete the course smoothly, safely, and accurately while demonstrating good riding skills, confidence, and effective communication with the horse. Handy Pony courses are suitable for a wide range of rider abilities and encourage practical horsemanship in a fun and supportive environment.
Riders for this event can book into either class or both. Please make sure you tick the correct box when booking.
